THE PORT TAKES ON NEW NORFOLK IN OPENING SFL ROUND THIS SATURDAY

With only a few sleeps before the 2016 football season kicks off, the Cygnet Community Bank Football Club is looking forward to taking on SFL heavyweight, New Norfolk at Cygnet this Saturday.

New Norfolk have been the benchmark of the competition over the past decade and The Port has never won either a Senior or Reserve game against the all-conquering Eagles. The challenge will again be in front of our boys and Saturday’s games will provide a good indication of how much progress the Club has made and importantly how much further we need to lift our performances to be competitive against the stronger SFL Clubs.

It has been an extremely busy off-season for the Club, both on and off the field. On the player front we are extremely pleased to welcome back local boys Ben Halton and Will Ford after their time with Statewide League Club, Lauderdale. Ben and Will have returned to help The Port as we fight for our football survival. We are the smallest in terms of population and now are the most remote club in the SFL. Last season 10 players who had come through our junior programs were playing with Statewide League Clubs and while the Club fully supports our boys furthering their football careers, it does have a massive impact on our player availability.

It is therefore very pleasing that Sam Dean, Grant Clark, Micheal ‘Pud’ Darcy, Jacob Brereton and Matty Dance have also committed to playing this season and they will greatly strengthen our on-ball and forward brigade. It is also hoped that multiple Best and Fairest winner, Bradley Watson will finally overcome his serious hip and groin injuries and again pull on the boots.

The Club is also excited that ex-AFL and Burnie Dockers star, Jason Laycock, has agreed to join his mates Brayden Hayes and Coach Gavin Quirk and pull on The Port jumper for season 2016. Jason’s football ability and presence and extensive knowledge of the game will be a great boost to his team mates and particularly our younger players.

In possibly the most pleasing news for 2016, we will field a Cygnet Southern Storm Under 18 team which will be coached by Matty Brereton and his Assistant, ‘Squid’ Gordon. Matt has had really good numbers on the track since late last year and the boys are extremely keen for the season to get underway.

Get along to the footy this weekend to see what will hopefully be three quality and competitive games. Don’t forget the Colt’s match will commence at 10.00am, followed by the Reserves and Seniors. Make sure you are there, as we look to see a full ground and great crowd to see three new look Port sides in 2016.

The Club has also been extremely busy off the field, with the construction of new change rooms taking up most weekends for a large number of players, members and volunteers. This has been a massive undertaking and would not have been possible without the generous support of local and Hobart businesses, local tradespersons and sponsors, all under our excellent project manager, Marcus Synnott. The rooms are now almost complete and the Club is aiming for an official opening at our second home game on Saturday 16 April. Further details will be provided in next week’s Huon News.
