Port Travel to Anzac Park

There was no joy for the Cygnet Football Club last Saturday as it recorded three losses to the Lindisfarne Two Blues at Anzac Park.

On a glorious day for football, the Colt’s kicked off proceedings and put in a really good first quarter with little separating both sides. The second term was more of the same and the young Two Blues only led by 8 points at half time. With a determined third term the Port hit the lead at the final break. However, the young Lindisfarne side steadied to run out winners by only 23 points over a dogged Port team.

Better players included Tom Slevin and Sam Cook who racked up plenty of possessions, while Brendan Direen and Jamin Braams both played well. Damien Duggan and Tyler Cowen rounded out a good team effort in a game the Port could easily have won. Sam Reinmuth with 3 goals was the focal point up forward.

An undermanned Reserves side took to the field with 8 or 9 experienced players missing from the side that almost upset Dodges Ferry the week before and ended up two players short on the bench which did not help. They fronted up to a much stronger and experienced Two Blues side than the one they defeated by 52 points in round 1, and never looked in the hunt from the first bounce. The Two Blues were simply too skilled and too quick and run in numbers all day with Luke Goodsell unstoppable at full forward with 8 goals. The Port were not prepared to run and were unaccountable enabling the Two Blues on-ballers to bombard their forwards putting the backline under extreme pressure. That weight of numbers and the Ports overall lack of experience, fitness and run told on the scoreboard at games end with a massive 133 point victory to the Lindisfarne team.

Better players were hard to find but Shaun Bird virtually rucked all day on his own in a tireless and gutsy effort while first-gamers John Spooner and Brad Grimsey showed they could be a handy acquisitions to the side. Jarrah Allan and Tim Bone both battled hard, as did David Bone and young Dean Atkinson. Goals were sparse with singles to John Spooner, Libba Paul and Paddy Ford. Thanks The Port will be looking for a much better showing against Brighton this coming Saturday and the return of some key players to take on the top side.

Due to the Reserves situation the Seniors were also far from full strength but welcomed in first gamers in young Colt Alex Ford and Mitchell Wilcox. A seven goal to two first term ensured the Two Blues would be hard to reel in. The Port were applying plenty of pressure and put in some good passages of play, but Lindisfarne held a commanding 40 point lead by half time. A seven goal to two third term saw the Blues holding a commanding lead at the final break. While the Port were held scoreless in the last half, they did at least fight out the game in the final term but had no answers to full forward Marriott and the run and carry of the Lindisfarne side who recorded a big 104 point win.

Better players for the Port included Mitchell Direen and Ben Free who both had plenty of the football all day while Captain Bradley Watson battled hard. Jules Direen and Rhys Jennings tried hard and young Alex Ford was extremely impressive in his first senior game – well done Alex!! Also, a special mention to Mitch Wilcox who also acquitted himself well as did Craig Phillips in his first senior game for the 2011 season. Jarryd Atkins with 2 goals was the Ports leading goal-kicker.

Next game we travel to Pontville Oval with the Port taking on the Robins who are up and about at the minute. Good luck to all three sides for what should be three keenly contested matches.

Match Synopsis .... flashes of good football and a few stalwart contributions in an otherwise forgettable game. A coming-of-age game for Alex Ford who is surprising many of us with the rapidity of his development.
