Port Travel to Twin Oval Complex to play Kingborough

The Cygnet Football Club traveled to the new Twin Oval facility last Saturday to do battle with traditional rivals in the Kingborough Football Club in perfect football conditions. The Port players were excited to be playing on the new oval and relished the sight of a dry ground. After a chilly start to the day the sun was shining when....

....the Colts hit the ground with a depleted young Cygnet facing one of the stronger sides in the competition. Both sides were going in hard for the football early in the game and the young Port side were showing a lot of fight and spirit against their more fancied opponents who held a 9 point lead at quarter time.

Five goals to nil in the second term enabled the Tigers to hold a handy 39 point lead at the long break. The Port battled bravely in the second half and played some good passages of football, but the young Tigers went on to record an 86  point victory.

Better players for the Port included Adam Direen who defended well all day while Reece Polley and Damien Duggan were good four quarter contributors. Jordan Direen rucked really well while Tom Slevin and Tyler Cowen tried hard. A really good effort by the boy’s considering the circumstances.

The Reserves unfortunately again had to double up Colt’s players due to the rampant flu doing the rounds plus injuries, however of late this has been an ongoing issue. The Port bounced out of the blocks surprising Kingborough with their attack on the football early in the first term and kicked the first goal of the game. The Tigers slowly kicked into gear but missed some gettable goals to take a 17 point lead at quarter time.

The game continued at a solid pace with the Port still matching the Tigers until around the eight minute mark of the second term when the Port became unaccountable and let the Tigers kick 5 quick goals in the last twelve minutes to take control of the game at the long break. The third term was again controlled by the Tigers with five unanswered goals. Coach Direen pleaded with his players to win the last quarter and keep the margin below 100 points. The Port matched the Tigers and fought back well when requested but still suffered a disappointing 88 point loss albeit against a fairly quick and well drilled side.

The Port’s best included Shaun Bird who rucked tirelessly and did plenty of ground work while David Bone and “Libba” Paul both had good games. Timmy Bone battled hard after taking a knock and Matty Dance and Vorne Graham used all their experience. Loic Auderset was very good in the back line and when rucking in the final term, while big Paul Sawyer set up a couple of goals in a good effort. Jamie Direen was the Ports leading goal-kicker with three majors.

The Seniors started fairly well but let the Tigers kick six goals to two to hold a handy 28 point lead at the first break. The Port were getting plenty of the football but turn-overs were costing them dearly which enabled the Tigers to open up a 51 point lead at the long break.

The third term was relatively even on the score board but the Tgers still held a match winning 58 point lead at the last change. Coach Tyrrell pleaded with his players to win the final term and prevent a blow-out on the score-board, but a flurry of goals from Kingborough in the last 10 minutes put paid to that and they recorded a big 89 point victory.

Better players for the Port were Will Ford who has turned into a really consistent defender and his game on former team mate “Billy” Lamprill had to be admired given the size and strength difference and the amount of in-coming ball. Paul Cowen played his best game of the year while Mitch Direen continued his good form. Jules Direen never knows how to play a bad game while Cam Wilcox continues to shoulder much of the rucking duties with little fuss. Mark Alberry had another good game to continue his good run of form. Matty Cane with 3 goals and Ben Halton with 2 were the Ports leading goal kickers. Young Colt player Alex Ford also kicked two very good goals and continues to impress coaching staff and supporters.

Match Synopsis .... The colts were first to try out the excellent new Twin Ovals surface which favoured good skills on a bright sunny morning. Kingborough colts excelled in the skill department and, although our guys lacked nothing in determination, the scoreboard reflected where the two teams sit in the competition. Good again to see Colts players stepping up to Senior level and helping out Reserves. This depletes the Colts game but shows the development in talent in our young guys again this year. Well done Sam & Alex.

Match Synopsis .... Outgunned this week. A courageous display by Tim Bone and a fair effort by the crew against a slick opposition. Birdy played his heart out then followed up with a full senior game .. thanks mate. Paul Sawyer marked strongly and created a couple of goals. Loic showed again why many of us see him as a senior prospect.. if he wants to put the extra yards in next year.

Match Synopsis .... A faster fitter Kingborough unit ran all day with a TSL standard performance which made Cygnet struggle. With several of our best performers unable to play this week, a huge blow-out was Kingborough's expectation. If it wasn't for a final 10 minutes lapse and a flurry of goals by the Tigers after the result was ensured, the scoreboard would have been something to be proud of. Cam Wilcox stood up to the job of rucking all day with a game which did the Wilcox clan proud.
