Cygnet Football Club's Past Players Reunion Dinner
(photos & report compliments "Huon News")
The Cygnet Football Club's Players and Officials annual Reunion Dinner was held at the Cygnet Football Club Rooms on Saturday, 8th August.
The function was organized to be held when Cygnet took on Kingborough in the Southern Football League's round of roster games.
This year the Cygnet Football Club's Premiership team of the Huon Football Association's 1974 season was honoured. It was the year Cygnet defeated Kingston by twenty-two points at Huonville in the Grand Final - the scores were 12.14 (86) to 9.10 (64).
Best for Cygnet on the day were Smith, Direen, Barrett, Cockshutt, Gordon and Dillon whilst Kingston 's best were Mitchell, Lamprill, Worsley, Doran, S. Hayers and Denehey.
Goals for Cygnet were kicked by Smith 5, O'Rourke 2, T. Elwell, Howard, Oakford, Gordon and G. Synnott with Kingston 's being booted by Lockett 3, Blake 2, Doran, Leary, Denehey and G. Hayers.
The Huon News was "thanked" at the Dinner on Saturday for the heading in the HFA Grand Final Preview in the Thursday edition of the "News" prior to the 1974 Grand Final game when the heading read "Tigers (Kingston) will eat Magpies (Cygnet)" - the thanks coming because this meant that Cygnet put in the extra yards to win the game. The heading in the edition following the Grand Final read "Magpies take 1974 Huon Association Title" and the introduction read "With an aerial supremacy, dominating the ruck duels, and better team work, Cygnet defeated Kingston to take out the 1974 Huon Football Association Pennant."
The importance of the Huon News over the years in recording what has happened in the region was apparent on Saturday when clippings of articles and photographs which were published in the "News" were placed on the tables for all to once again reminisce.
David Brereton was MC for the afternoon, assisted by Committee Members including John Synnott and Brian Dillon. President "Tidsy" Smith was unable to attend.
About 120 people enjoyed a magnificent three-course luncheon with Brendan Connell saying Grace prior to the meal. Brendan gave thanks for what the Cygnet Football Club has given for the town, towards the history of the area, the friendships made, and asked that thought be given to those who presently are not well and those who have passed away.
The Cygnet Football Club's Senior Coach, Michael (Pud) Darcy brought his Senior team into the Dinner. He said that there had been a huge challenge this year with 40 having played in the Seniors so far this season, including twelve "debutantes" and five underage players.
"Pud" also acknowledged the work and commitment of Reserves Coach Jamie Direen, Colts Coach John Duggan and all their players.
"Every time a player puts on the Port's jumper they give 100% for the Cygnet Football Club," "Pud" said. "We thank the Past Players for putting in place a foundation for the present day players."
Cygnet's Seniors wore their "Black and White Strip" from the days of the Huon Football Association for the day.
Visitors on the day were welcomed from the Huonville, Franklin , Kermandie, Channel and Kingston Football Clubs.
The Huon Valley News Editor, Maureen Oates, was thanked for the "News" support of local sport.
Robin Dance, Vice President of the Past Players and Supporters Committee, thanked everyone for attending - including past players, past coaches, past committee members, members of kindred clubs, etc.
Robin said the Committee and Club had an ongoing aim to replace all the Club's Premiership Flags with plaques and for the Flags to be stored safely away. Many have already been done and on the day the Kermandie Football Club Old Players and Officials offered to provide $80 for provision of another plaque.
The Kermandie Football Club has been "in recess" for season 2009 and many of the Club's players have been playing with Cygnet this season.
Kerry Doran was guest speaker and he reflected on members of the Cygnet Football Club who have played at a "higher level". He came up with about 40 names but by the end of the Dinner lots more had been added. In weeks to come, the Huon Valley News hopes to be able to publish this list - when it is all compiled and hopefully no-one has been left off!
Tony "Rip" Clifford and his helpers had done a magnificent job in seeking out and receiving more than twenty donations for prizes for the raffle on the day. The Cygnet community - and particularly the local businesses - have been magnificent in recent months when asked to donate towards fund raising activities.
